Scoliosis is the name given to a spine which isn’t straight. It’s surprisingly common, in fact around 1 in 20 people have a true scoliosis, with many more people suffering from a slight curve of the spine. Scoliosis is generally first diagnosed at the start of puberty, and it’s around twice as common in girls as boys.
When the spine curves to one side, it puts pressure on the bones, joint and muscles unevenly throughout the body. That can mean that your weight leans a lot more on one leg, that your pelvis becomes unable to move on one side or that you neck becomes stiff. The muscles then start to over-work and over-compensate, and that’s when you start to feel pain.
Because the whole body relies on the position of the spine, any part of the body can become painful due to a scoliosis. Common pain complaints related to scoliosis include headache, backache, shoulder pain and knee pain, but even hand and foot pain can easily be caused by scoliosis.
It’s best to start to treat a scoliosis as soon as possible. While you’re still growing it’s important to take regular x-rays to see if the scoliosis is getting any worse. To relieve pain cause by the scoliosis it’s important to keep the joints moving properly and to make the muscles around the spine strong and supple. Chiropractic treatment is ideal to reduce tension in your muscles, to make your back and pelvis move properly and to help you strengthen your muscles to stop scoliosis causing you pain.
